Areed: It would depend on your specific needs and budget. Your mom will need to go back to your carrier to purchase a new SIM card, which is usually about $20 or so. In terms of buying an unlocked phone, there are many online retailers (as well as physical stores) that sell them.

If you get a smartphone with a proper web browser, you should be able to download just about any file that you find on the Internet. There are a variety of unlocked smartphones for you to consider, including Windows Mobile handsets from HTC.
-- Contributed by: MichaelKwanhi! the t-mobile pda people told me that none of their phones were capable of downloading videos. i have a t-mobile blackberry pearl 8100 (gold), if i get an 'unlocked' phone- and put a t-mobile sim card in it(trying to use it with an active t-mobile account) will it still be unable to download vids?

The GSM frequencies ("bands") for use in North America are typically 850MHz and 1900MHz. T-Mobile tends to rely on the latter more than the former.

This would probably be the least expensive strategy you can take, because buying a new phone without a contract can prove to be very pricey.
