After the huge announcement at WWDC in San Francisco, the question on everyone's mind was, "When does the new iPhone come out?" You all want to get our hands on the newest version of Apple's cell phone and the release date could not come any sooner.
Introducing the iPhone 3G S
Before we address the issue of the release date, perhaps it would be a good idea to discuss what you should expect from the new Apple iPhone 3GS. By and large, it seems that Apple has worked to address many of the main iPhone complaints that arose from the first two iterations in the series.
For starters, the two-megapixel fixed focus camera on the existing iPhone 3G has been upgraded to a three-megapixel autofocus camera on the iPhone 3GS. Further still, this new camera is now able record VGA video at 30 frames per second. This brings the picture and video functionality at least up to par with some other smartphones.
Other notable upgrades that are accompanying the iPhone 3GS are improved tethering support, 7.2Mbps HSDPA high-speed wireless data, greener materials, a compass application, voice control, Nike+ support, and significantly improved battery life.
Is This Really a New iPhone?
If you're still left wondering when does the new iPhone come out, you may also be wondering if this is really a new iPhone at all. After all, the new iPhone 3GS looks aesthetically identical to the current iPhone 3G. It has the same shape, the same glossy plastic body, and the same touchscreen display.
While there have been some internal improvements, like the new camera, most of the changes for the iPhone 3GS come in the form of a software update. Bringing an iPhone 3G up to speed with the iPhone 3.0 firmware will certainly help, but the iPhone 3GS does bring some new hardware in there as well, as mentioned in the previous section.
Is this really a new iPhone? While it may not be quite as substantial an aesthetic upgrade as you'll find when going from a Palm Centro to a Palm Pre, there is enough of the new stuff with the iPhone 3GS to make it a new iPhone.
When Does the New iPhone Come Out?
The good news is that when the Apple representatives took the stage at WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) in San Francisco, they were able to tell us about the launch date for the iPhone 3GS. The bad news is that it was not immediately available.
When does the new iPhone come out? According to the official announcement and press materials, the iPhone 3GS was available on June 19, 2009. Based on the quickly rising popularity of the iPhone 3G, it is almost a given that the new iPhone will be a success. The biggest hurdle is that customers already in a contract may have to pay a much higher price to get the iPhone 3GS.
Pricing with AT&T, Rogers, and Fido
Now that you can answer the question "when does the new iPhone come out?", you might want to know how much it will cost. Pricing appears to be quite uniform across the three North American service providers who will be carrying the new iPhone and this pricing is in line with the iPhone 3G.
With AT&T, the iPhone 3GS with 16GB of internal memory will be listed at $199 with a qualifying two-year service agreement. Should you choose to take the larger 32GB variant instead, it will cost you $299 with the same two-year contract.
In Canada, the iPhone 3GS will be made available through Rogers Wireless and Fido for the same price, except you'll need to sign a new three-year contract.
