Verizon Wireless Internet Service
From LoveToKnow Cellphones
Verizon Wireless Internet service is more than the ability to Google your latest pondering on your phone. It can allow you to use the Internet on your computer wherever you go as long as you're in the Verizon Wireless network.
About Verizon Wireless Internet Service
While there is always the option to purchase a data package for certain Verizon phones that will allow you to use the Internet on your handset, there is another option as well. That involves using your phone to get your computer on the Internet.
Yes, there are ways to get online to check your corporate or personal email via the Verizon Wireless Internet service.
Internet on Your Phone
For those with simple needs, Verizon Wireless' Internet service for your phone will be enough without getting into the special mobile kits you'd need if you were to try to link your phone to your computer for Internet access. There are special options you can get as part of Mobile Web, as well, such as keeping up with your stocks, finding out about the weather, and more. In addition, there are email options so you can stay connected with your friends and co-workers on the go.
Dashboard
When you use the mobile Internet service available from Verizon Wireless, you can take advantage of the Dashboard feature. Have all the information you want about weather, news, sports, stocks, and more right at your fingertips when you pick up your handset. To get it, sign up for either VPak, which includes Dashboard and unlimited Mobile Web, or go for the A La Carte option, which charges per megabyte sent and received and does not include Mobile Web. Keep in mind that only select phones are compatible with Dashboard and Mobile Web.
Mobile Web
Mobile Web comes in a few forms. You can pay a monthly access fee on a non-nationwide plan or skip the fee on a nationwide plan. Either way, if you just sign up for Mobile Web, you'll be charged for airtime and by the megabyte. However, if you sign up for a V CAST VPak plan, you will only pay the set subscription fee. You won't have a monthly charge or be charged by megabyte.
With the V CAST plan, you'll pay either $15 per month or $25 per month depending on whether you would like to include Mobile TV in your plan as well. For heavy Internet users, this will quickly become the better, less expensive option. You also get extras, like videos from CNN, YouTube, and ESPN, plus the ability to check your email whether you have an account with Hotmail, Yahoo, or another similar service.
You can visit Verizon Wireless' Frequently Asked Questions related to Mobile Web for more information.
VZEmail - Wireless Email
This is a service aimed at government workers. It makes sure everyone is able to communicate quickly and effectively via their mobile phone (smartphone, BlackBerry, etc) and a corporate information system.
Using Your Handset As a Modem
To use your handset as a modem and therefore be able to use the Internet on your computer wherever you go—even if you're not in an area with WiFi—you'll need something called Mobile Broadband Connect. What that will allow you to do is connect your phone to your laptop via a cable you will have to purchase separately and, as long as you're within range of the Mobile Broadband Rate and Coverage area, access the Internet. You can even transfer files and send or receive emails with attachments.
Upload and download speeds will vary based on the type of setup you have. The stated speeds, 600-1.4 Mbps (download) and 500-800 Kbps (upload) for EV-DO Rev. A-capable devices and 400-700 Kbps (download) and 60-80 Kbps (upload) for EV-DO Rev. 0-capable devices, may still vary, as will coverage.
