Can You Use Non-Verizon Mobile Phones?

Before you get started, perhaps it is important to discuss the possibility of using a phone from outside of Verizon's selection with Verizon's network. After all, it is possible to use an unlocked GSM phone with AT&T, for example.

However, since Verizon uses CDMA-based technology, it is not nearly as easy to use a non-Verizon phone with this particular carrier. Some people have managed to find workarounds, but these are far from official and come with no shortage of risks. In this way, it is perhaps best to stick with the official Verizon Wireless cell phone models.

Whether you are interested in flip phones, smartphones, or anything in between, there is a good chance that you'll be able to find something you like among the cell phone models offered through Verizon Wireless. Here are a few of the notable highlights as of the time this article was written.

Prepaid Cell Phones

When most people think about cheap prepaid phones, they assume that these handsets will be very basic and offer very little in terms of style. Such is not the case with Verizon.

The Samsung Juke is perhaps one of the more creative music phones available on the market today, especially since it looks a lot more like a portable MP3 player than a mobile phone. Available in red or blue, the Samsung Juke also offers an interesting "switchblade" like mechanism.

The Verizon Wireless Blitz may look like a "chubby" little toy, but this uniquely shaped phone offers a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. This makes it great for instant messaging and e-mails.

V CAST Phones

A big part of the Verizon Wireless branding surrounds the V CAST family of multimedia services. In addition to music and videos, Verizon also has the VZ Navigator service that mimics the utility of a standalone GPS device.

The Motorola Rapture VU30 is one such V CAST cell phone. It comes with removable memory, Bluetooth, a 2.0 megapixel camera, and Rhapsody music downloads.

The LG Voyager isn't quite a smartphone, but it sure looks like one. You get a large touchscreen display with haptic feedback, as well as a full QWERTY keyboard inside. Not surprisingly, the Voyager comes with the full slate of V CAST functionality as well.

Getting Smarter with BlackBerry

The BlackBerry family of smartphones from RIM may have once catered to the corporate business end of the market, but many of these phones are now being marketed toward regular consumers as well.

The BlackBerry Pearl 8230 takes the familiar BlackBerry Pearl and delivers it in a clamshell (flip phone) form factor. You still get a trackball, SureType keyboard, and a 2.0 megapixel camera.

Competing against the Apple iPhone is the BlackBerry Storm 9530, the first BlackBerry smartphone to feature a touchscreen display. The clicking touchscreen (SurePress) is an industry first.

The BlackBerry Tour 9630 is widely accepted as the spiritual successor of the BlackBerry Curve. There's a trackball, QWERTY keyboard, and mobile broadband, as well as a 3.2 megapixel camera and V CAST.

What About a Verizon iPhone?

Even though there are already many Verizon Wireless cell phone models to consider, spanning all sorts of genres and feature lists, there is still the question of whether Cupertino's offering will ever make it to the realm of CDMA.

At this point, the possibility of a Verizon Wireless Apple iPhone is little more than a rumor. AT&T, at the time of this writing, still has the American exclusivity rights to the iPhone, but these rights may soon be expiring.

Will the iPhone join the Verizon Wireless lineup? Time will tell.
