T Mobile MyTouch

From LoveToKnow Cellphones

Could the T-Mobile MyTouch be the perfect solution for those T-Mobile users who crave an Apple iPhone but forbid themselves to make the switch to AT&T for any number of reasons?

T-Mobile MyTouch

The T-Mobile MyTouch Overview

The MyTouch from T-Mobile is a touch screen phone that works on a 3G network, utilizes thousands of apps and Google tools, and allows you to instantly share your videos and pictures—you can even upload them directly to YouTube. It boasts a "100% You" feel, allowing you to customize it so much on the inside and the outside that the phone really does become uniquely yours.

Technology and Features

You get a lot in a small, lightweight cell phone package with the T-Mobile MyTouch. Along with the 3.2" screen that rotates between portrait and landscape modes depending on how you're holding the phone, you get:

  • 3.2 megapixel camera
  • Instant messaging, and not just Google Talk—you can use Yahoo Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, and Windows Live Messenger too
  • Up to six hours of talk time
  • Up to 600 hours of standby time
  • Personal and work email
  • Rapid data speeds
  • Easy picture and video sharing on YouTube, Picasa, and email
  • Google Search by Voice
  • Google Maps Street View
  • Removable 4GB microSD card and 512 MB of internal memory

This phone is also offered in other markets, like Canada, as the HTC Magic.

Compared to the G1 Model

There was a MyTouch predecessor, but the T-Mobile G1 model was clunkier, had a physical keyboard, and didn't offer some of the conveniences of the 3G model, such as the search button or shortcuts associated with pressing and holding down specific buttons. For example, you can get a keyboard to pop up on the screen by holding down the menu button.

You get more talk time, more standby time, more memory, a video camera, and stereo Bluetooth.

Compared to Similar Phones

The T-Mobile MyTouch is most frequently compared to the iPhone, the Palm Pre and certain BlackBerry models. One thing that make the MyTouch stand out is the handful of buttons still present on the body of the phone. Some users may find that they would benefit by allowing that space to be taken up by more screen and those buttons' uses incorporated into the "touch" feature. One other common complaint has more to do with T-Mobile than the phone itself. Their 3G network leaves much to be desired in some areas. Overall, the reviews of the MyTouch have been positive.

About Android

If you aren't familiar with Android, you may be baffled if you see the name linked to the phone. The answer, though, is simple. Android is an operating system developed by Google that is used on both the G1 and 3G models of the MyTouch.

Apps

There are so many applications out there for the MyTouch, you can completely customize your phone, creating shortcuts to the things you love. Choose from apps like:

  • Google Sky Map
  • WeatherBug
  • Bonsai Blast
  • imeem Mobile
  • Places Directory
  • Movies by Flixster
  • Absolute Fitness
  • Brain Challenge
  • Wixel
  • E! Online
  • News Buzz
  • FeedR News Reader

Accessorize

What would a phone that boasts easy personalization be without an easy way to change the way the outside looks? Choose from a vast selection of exterior shells, gel skins, and homescreen themes you've never seen before. Grab a fashion case in your favorite color, a gel skin with a handy wrist strap, or just get yourself started with the MyTouch Starter Kit that includes a black gel skin, car charger, a commuter mug, and On the Go App recommendations.

Availability

The MyTouch 3G had a scheduled release date of August 5, 2009. However, T-Mobile customers were able to pre-order theirs almost a month earlier and the devices were scheduled to be shipped at the end of July.

Final Thoughts

The T-Mobile MyTouch is a good competitor for other similar phones on the market, and a vast improvement over the G1 model. For those who like for their phone to do everything—but who want to customize their phone in every way imaginable—this is a great choice. Be sure to investigate T-Mobile's 3G coverage in your area before letting the trial period run out though.
