T Mobile Dash
From LoveToKnow Cellphones
While you may be tempted to get a BlackBerry for your business email and other uses, you shouldn't overlook the possibility of going with a T-Mobile Dash instead. Dare to be a little bit different with this terrific smartphone that comes loaded with plenty of features.
Staying Connected with Smartphones
In recent years, smartphones have quickly risen in popularity. It used to be that corporate users were the only ones interested in smartphones, but this has vastly changed with the arrival of devices such as the Apple iPhone and Palm Pre. Regular consumers are starting to recognize the added value and versatility that these handsets can offer.
Going through the T-Mobile lineup, you'll discover quite the wide range of smartphone options. BlackBerry users have plenty of models to consider and people who would prefer to try Google Android can get the T-Mobile MyTouch or T-Mobile G1.
The T-Mobile Dash may have an appearance similar to a BlackBerry, but the operating system used as its platform is Windows Mobile. With this powerful OS at its core, the Dash can be used to mobile email, web surfing, instant messaging, photo management, and more.
The First T-Mobile Dash
As with so many other Windows Mobile handsets, the original T-Mobile Dash was produced by HTC of Taiwan. In other markets, slight variants on this phone were sold as the HTC Excalibur, among other names.
Key features include the full QWERTY keyboard, HTC JOGGR touch-sensitive navigation bar, 64MB RAM, 128MB ROM, microSD expansion, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone, 1.3-megapixel camera, and Pocket Office.
While the phone has a relatively thin profile, the footprint is larger than most other similar smartphones from other companies. This is a tradeoff, in many respects, and customers may have varying opinions on this tradeoff. The two-tone appearance has also been a point of contention for some consumers.
The Dash was announced in September 2006, so it's not the newest phone on the block anymore. In fact, it has largely been discontinued by T-Mobile and the official website is showing that T-Mobile is out of stock. Why would they discontinue the phone? A replacement was released, of course!
Going Faster with Dash 3G
Largely following in the footsteps of the first Dash, the newer T-Mobile Dash 3G came in a similar style but with all sorts of improvements and new features. This T-Mobile cell phone is the North American version of the HTC Snap and it can be found through other international carriers through a variety of other names.
Announced in March 2009 and released in June 2009, the Dash 3G takes advantage of the faster network speeds afforded by 3G mobile phone technology. That is where it derives its name and this added speed vastly changes the user experience. Loading mobile web pages and downloading content from the Internet is significantly faster than before.
The touch-sensitive navigation bar of the original is replaced with a trackball, not unlike the ones found on contemporary BlackBerry devices, and this is backed up with a 2.4" QVGA display and full QWERTY keyboard. Other notable highlights include WiFi, Bluetooth, 2-megapixel camera, 192MB RAM, 256MB ROM, Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard, 528MHz processor, aGPS, and a built-in music player.
The overall dimensions of the Dash 3G are also smaller than that of its predecessor, allowing for a more compact size and a more pocket-friendly form factor. The keyboard style has also been changed, potentially working to improve typing speeds and user comfort.
At the time this article was written, the T-Mobile Dash 3G was listed on the official website at $169.99. This assumes a qualifying two-year service agreement. Shorter contracts are also available, though the effective price of the phone will go up as a result.
