There are many ways that you can try to get better reception with your Motorola mobile phone. Naturally, there are countless factors that come into play when considering the signal strength that you are receiving and not all of these are related directly to your phone.

Most commonly, if you find yourself in a "concrete jungle" like a downtown metropolis, it is possible that the thick concrete walls and tall buildings are blocking your reception. The same can be said about underground parking lots and basement suites in homes. The single best way to improve your signal is to simply get yourself as much in the open as possible. Other issues may include dead spots in your mobile operator's service area, a high volume of similar phones in your vicinity, and problems with the cell phone satellite.

If the issue is your mobile phone antenna, however, you may want to consider purchasing a cell phone signal booster. These come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Signal Booster Sticker

You've probably seen these for sale on eBay. You've probably also seen them as a "free bonus" to accompany another cell phone accessory purchase. You've got to wonder, though, how useful are these little stickers?

In real world tests, the net improvement is minimal at best. The idea behind these stickers is that they can amplify your reception, but most people have been disappointed with their performance.

At the same time, you may find that mobile phones with "stubby" antennas get better receptions that phones with internal antennas. In this way, the signal booster sticker may be most effective with the latter rather than the former. An example of a "stubby" antenna can be found on the Motorola V635. The SLVR, PEBL and RAZR all have internal antennas.

Improve Reception With an External Antenna

External cell phone antennas are much bulkier than the stickers described above. In general, these antennas are at least the size of a paperback book and they connect directly to your phone via some sort of cable.

For Motorola phones, you may notice a small rubber covering on the back of your phone. Remove this small rubber piece (about the size of an eraser head) and you'll find a port where you can screw in the cable. The connector is different for different phones, but most Motorola phones of the same "generation" will use the same connection.

Larger cell phone signal booster antennas are typically more effective. To further improve their performance, it is best to place the external antenna as close to a window as possible. This minimizes interference from thick walls. You should also avoid other electronic devices which may provide interference as well. For example, the radiation emitted from a microwave may affect your mobile phone reception.

Homemade Solutions

Prefer to try a novel solution on your own? The mobile phone enthusiasts on the Internet have devised some rather clever contraptions that may increase your signal. Check out our article on homemade cell phone signal boosters for more information. Bear in mind that these solutions are experimental at best.
