IPhone Complaints

Despite all the hype surrounding its release, there are also countless iPhone complaints that have come to the surface, clearly demonstrating that the Apple iPhone is far from perfect.

The Big iPhone Expectations

Before it was even released to the public in June 2007, there were a lot of Apple iPhone news and rumors floating around in the Internet that made nearly everyone want one. Just as the Apple iPod has been a huge success for the company, they were hoping for an equally resounding response from the marketplace for their first entry into the cell phone market.

As you know, the Apple iPhone does not necessarily revolutionize the way that we use our cell phones -- Windows Mobile-based HTC Smartphones are capable of doing most of the things that the iPhone can do -- but where it was really going to shine was with aesthetics and the "cool" factor. The same can be said about the iPod. There were other MP3 players available before the iPod, but it was the iPod that took that kind of device to the mainstream.

There is no possible way that the iPhone will ever live up to the enormous amount of hype that was built up for it. As such, there are many people who have begun to point out the cell phone's shortcomings. In this way, you've got to wonder if the iPhone will be considered a success. Based on consumer response and sales, we're inclined to say that it has been quite the success.

List of Common iPhone Complaints

Despite all the positive press than the Apple iPhone has received in mainstream media, there is a growing contingent in the blogosphere who are pointing out problems that they have had with the iPhone or features that they feel are lacking. Here are a few of the most common iPhone complaints that have been voiced.

  • Too expensive: Priced at $499 and $599 for the 4GB and 8GB models respectively, the Apple iPhone is considerably more expensive than most affordable cell phones. When you factor in the cost for data, the iPhone is too expensive for many people.
  • Slow data connection: While other operators are slowly moving toward widespread 3G data, this has not been the case with AT&T, the exclusive carrier of the iPhone. When on the road with the iPhone, you will be restricted to a somewhat slow EDGE-based connection. Thankfully, the iPhone does have WiFi, so you can pick up the pace if you're at a hotspot.
  • No memory expansion: Sure, the iPhone comes with at least four gigabytes of internal memory, but there is no way for you to expand that memory through external memory cards. If you're moving from a 30GB or 80GB iPod video, you'll notice the difference in capacity pretty quickly.
  • No third-party support: Unlike true smartphones, the iPhone does not allow for third-party applications. You're restricted to what Apple offers you directly, but there are online applications that can be accessed through the built-in Safari Web browser.
  • Lack of camera customization: Although the iPhone comes with a decent 2 megapixel camera, there is a severe lack of customization. You can't adjust the resolution, white balance or any of those other basic digital camera controls.
  • Ringtone restrictions: Unlike most other mobile phones on the market, the iPhone (officially) does not support third party cell phone ringtones. Instead, you're stuck with the 25 ringtones that come with the iPhone.
  • No video: Further to the camera woes, the on-board camera on the iPhone cannot record video.
  • No real QWERTY keyboard: Some people may not like having a physical QWERTY keyboard, but for those who do, the virtual keyboard found on the iPhone can be quite a pain.
  • No user replaceable battery: As you may already know, all rechargeable batteries eventually fail to hold a charge after a while. The same will happen to every iPhone on the market and when that time comes, you'll have little choice but to ship the unit to Apple (at your expense) for them to install a new battery (also at your expense).
