Since it is so much safer to keep both hands on the steering wheel, it may be a good idea to consider using a hands-free Bluetooth speakerphone while driving. This way, you can stay focused on the road while being able to maintain a conversation with business colleagues, friends and loved ones.

The idea behind a hands-free Bluetooth speakerphone is much the same as what you would get with a Bluetooth headset. They both operate using the same Bluetooth technology, pairing with your Bluetooth-compatible cellular phone so that you can maintain a voice call without having to hold the phone next to your ear.

A Bluetooth speakerphone can be as small as a deck of cards or it can be about as big as a regular landline telephone. Another great advantage over regular headsets is that conversations can be shared. Imagine going into a conference room where a room filled with individuals wants to discuss something with another room filled with other people. If both ends of the conversation use a suitable Bluetooth speakerphone, all parties can be involved in the discussion.

While you could invest in a Bluetooth retrofit kit for your car, there are portable versions can be taken from car to car as well. This adds the same kind of versatility as portable GPS navigation devices.

If your cell phone is capable of using the Bluetooth A2DP stereo profile and you purchase a hands-free Bluetooth speakerphone that comes with similar functionality, it may be possible to stream music from your music phone to the speaker.

This is a great way to share your music with people around you and can make for a much better experience than the underpowered speakers on the cell phone itself. There are even some iPod speaker docks and other similar systems that come equipped with Bluetooth; they are designed primarily for music, but sometimes come with an integrated microphone too if you want to participate in a voice call.

The primary purpose for most Bluetooth speakerphones is in the car. With laws recently being passed in states such as California banning the use of hand-held cell phones while driving, speakerphones and Bluetooth headsets are quickly rising in popularity.

These Bluetoth speakerphones can typically be mounted on the visor above your head, while some systems integrate with your car's stereo system or clip to the rearview mirror. Whatever the case, all it takes is a single button press to answer and hang up on calls. This way, both hands stay on the wheel and everyone can be much safer as a result.

That said, the safest solution of them all is not to answer voice calls while driving in the first place. Even with a hands-free device, your mind can still wander off the road and onto the call; pay attention to road hazards first!
