HTC Smartphones

From LoveToKnow Cellphones

You may not have ever heard of them, but there's a good chance you've seen a lot of HTC smartphones around the marketplace. HTC is easily one of the largest makers of Windows Mobile-powered cell phones, particularly those with PDA form factors. Why haven't you heard of them? Because they are primarily an ODM (original design manufacturer), with the bulk of their products being sold under a number of different brand names. If you love Windows Mobile, plenty of functionality, and some great looking designs, then you should seriously consider some of HTC's line-up.

HTC Smartphones: The Silent Giant

Based out of Taiwan, High Tech Computer (HTC, for short) manufactures a wide range of mobile handsets with a distinct specialization in smartphones and PDA phones that run in a Windows-based environment. Their unique designs are so highly sought after that several cell phone makers and service providers enthusiastically approach HTC for their latest innovations. HTC smartphones are generally not designed to run on CDMA-based networks, rather working more with the general GSM worldwide standard. In the United States, both Cingular and T-Mobile carry HTC-designed products. You'll also find their smartphones in Europe though Vodafone, and throughout Asia under a variety of guises.

Products Also Sold As…

The reason why it is difficult to immediately recognize a product as an HTC smartphone is because their name rarely appears on anything they make. This philosophy has changed somewhat in the past few months, with the Taiwanese firm releasing a few handsets under their branding (e.g., the TyTN and MTeor), but as a general rule, most of their phones do not bear their namesake. Some of the affiliates and subsidiaries that carry their handsets include:

  • Qtek
  • i-mate
  • Dopod
  • Orange
  • T-Mobile
  • Cingular
  • Vodafone
  • Audiovox
  • O2

Popular HTC Smartphones and Handsets

HTC makes many, many different cell phones and smartphones, but to further confuse the matter, there are several variants to each platform they create. One of the most appealing factors of the HTC smartphones are the creative names they receive -- Amadeus, Monet, Blue Angel, Apache, and so on -- but they often get renamed and rebadged under any number of their affiliates. Each variant may be slightly different than the original design, moving a button here or an extra feature there, but they are fundamentally identical to the original platform. Here is but a small sample of what HTC has to offer:
