Cingular Cell Phones

As one of the two major GSM cell phone service providers in the United States (T-Mobile being the other), Cingular features prominently in people's minds when they think about cell phone companies. The unmistakable orange goop of a mascot is known from coast to coast, but as Cingular operates out of Atlanta, Georgia, the vast majority of their subscribers are found in the South. In this way, it has been said that this southern slant has skewed the American Idol contests, given that all five winners have been from the Southern United States.

Cingular Cell Phones - Raising the Bar

Cingular Wireless is the largest mobile phone company in the United States, with more than 56 million subscribers. The company is a joint venture between BellSouth and SBC Wireless, and is popular among users because of its "Rollover" service, sending unused minutes into the following month.

Looking Forward: 3G High Speed Data

Cingular Wireless, as a company, clearly has its sights set forward and not in the past. They've already announced that they're phasing out the ancient TDMA and analog networks, with full elimination coming by 2008. As the third generation of cell phone technology is now upon us, Cingular too has adopted the higher speeds brought on by 3G Mobile Phone Technology. In addition to GPRS and EDGE, Cingular is also working to offer HSDPA, UMTS, and WCDMA.

Fewest Dropped Calls

While Verizon may be heavily pushing their "Can you Hear Me Now?" campaign, Cingular quickly counters by saying that they have the fewest number of dropped calls across the country. Independent research performed by Telephia confirms this claim, and thus Cingular has been promoting their "Allover Network."

The Future

As hard as the people have worked in the past five years to build up Cingular's reputation, and to make that squiggly orange figure such a cultural icon, there are reports that the Cingular brand will be killed off some time in the future. This is because AT&T will be purchasing BellSouth's telephone and wireless operations (including Cingular), and reviving its own brand in Cingular's place. At a date yet to be determined, Cingular will start getting phased out and AT&T Wireless phased in.
