Cell Phone Surveillance Applications
From LoveToKnow Cellphones
Why are you interested in cell phone surveillance applications? There could be a number of reasons. Concerned parents, for example, may want to keep tabs on their children so that they know where they are at any given moment. There are other applications as well, though, that go beyond tracking the location of a cellular phone.
In the Interest of Security
First and foremost, the vast majority of people who utilize cell phone surveillance applications do so in the interest of safety and security. You've probably seen a few television shows or movies where government officials investigating a case will track a cell phone using GPS. Even if the phone does not have built-in GPS capabilities, they are able to approximate the location of the person of interest using cell phone tower triangulation.
In general, it is illegal to track a cell phone using GPS without the explicit permission of the person being tracked. This applies to the United States, as well as several other countries around the world. In this way, if you are interested in this kind of surveillance technology, you should should get your local government regarding the legal issues that may be involved.
As you can imagine, these restrictions placed on the use of cell phone surveillance applications are also there to protect the safety and privacy of the individuals involved. I don't think you would like it if a random stranger could track your location without your knowledge.
Cell Phone Surveillance Applications
Cell phone surveillance can take on a number of different forms, so let's have a look at some of the possibilities.
Following the Handset via GPS
As mentioned above, the most common cell phone surveillance applications are used to track a cell phone using GPS. This utility depends, in part, on the handset involved and the cellular network associated with the phone. If a phone has built-in GPS functionality, it is much easier to trace its location. The accuracy of the tracking is also much improved.
Even so, there are cell phone surveillance applications that do not require this type of GPS tracking. There are several services on the Internet, for example, where you can install "hidden" software on the phone that lets it be tracked. This gives the site the apparent permission to track it. In this way, if you lose your phone and find it back a little while later, it is possible that a third party has installed that software on your phone without your knowledge.
Eavesdropping on Phone Calls
While this kind of technology is hard to acquire by the average citizen, government officials and other similar organizations may have the ability to listen in on your conversation by intercepting the cell phone signal. As you can imagine, the listening and recording of phone calls without the consent of all parties involved can run into many kinds of legal issues. In this way, it is not recommended that you use these types of cell phone surveillance applications without the prior permission of everyone involved.
This could be a problem that you may encounter when buying used cell phones. Even though the selle is no longer in physical possession of phone, some software may have been installed that sends information to an alternate device. This is the stuff of espionage, but regular citizens may fall victim to this type of fraud and invasion of privacy as well.
Using the Cell Phone to Watch the Home
One of the lesser known forms of cell phone surveillance applications involves your home security system. If you have a webcam on your home computer or if you set up an IP camera with your home's broadband Internet connection, it may be possible to use smartphone software to watch the video feeds on the go.
Even if you are away from your home, you can keep an eye on it. This assumes that your smartphone has an available wireless data plan and you sign up for an appropriate online service. You want to ensure that the streaming video feed is secure, though, so that unauthorized third parties aren't spying into your home as well.
